Hello All: This was today in the Guardian; how the people from Chagos Island was expelled from their homes, with no attention to self-determination issues. Please see www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1785297,00.html Saludos, Otto

Hi Otto,
Great you are still about. The link does not work by the way.
If you are implying that because the Chagos islanders were not permitted self-determination that Falkland Islanders should also not be permitted the same then you are saying that a bad example should be folloed. Surely this is bad reasoning?
The British Courts have ruled that the Chagos Islanders should be returned to their homeland. Only HMG prevents this. Illegally in my opinion.
The rest of the British Empire has already enjoyed self-determination why not the rest following this good example?
Best wishes,
Ernie

Hello Ernie!
Nice to hear from you!
What I am implying is the lack of principlesç when it is convenient to use self-determination than UK uses it. It is not a principle that should be observed for all. Governments do not need examples, they already know what is going on, they just use meanders to avoid doing anything that they do not wish.
You wrote about good examples, but this, of course, does not include Iraq and the UK pragmatism on securing its position together with the US in that country. As you know, you were not really invited in that country.
Saludos, Otto
