Just thought I would post the thread that John was referring to in 'For Ernie and All' for comment or constructive expansion if anyone is interested.
To all Forum Participants,
I was listening to a story on the radio today (possibly apochryphal) regarding space technology when the Americans are reputed to have spent millions of dollars in trying to perfect a pen that would work correctly in space for their astronauts. The Russians alternatively gave their cosmonauts pencils and solved the problem of writing in zero gravity simply and at little or no complication or cost at all.
It occurs to me that that the present Falklands/Anglo/Argentine situation has become complicated beyond all reason and this is the sort of practical simple solution we are looking for to begin to solve the problem of the Argentine sovereignty claim to the Falklands. No excessive and unnecessary complications and intricate gymnastic symbolism required but a little simple lateral thinking that could lead to a breakthrough in relations.
From my point of view the simple solution would be to initially restore normal commercial, travel and diplomatic relations between the Falklands and the Latin American mainland including Argentina. This was after all largely the position that existed until the middle of the twentieth century, for example when Uruguay and Chile maintained consular representation in the Falklands, excepting that no significant dialogue took place in that era, as there was no real ongoing confrontation.
Everyone would respect each other’s position and recognize each other’s right to exist in their own space without conceding mutual positions on sovereignty.
It should then be possible to discuss and hopefully resolve differences in a calm and civilized atmosphere rather than one of artificially engineered confrontation as presently exists.
Would anyone like to develop this idea further?
Best wishes,
Ernie
