Hello All!
I often see arguments in this forum about the rights of the Islanders and rights of any population (as long as this population is not above some oil fields) and so on.
What is a democracy? Does it really exist? Democracy, in my humble opinion, is just a façade to secure interests. After you vote it seems that it is only a blank check for the governments to do what they want, without any further inconveniency.
Suppose, for an instance that, for example, the Islanders wanted to be Argentine citizens. Well, we see lots of arguments here that their rights or decisions, or anything close to this would be paramount regarding this subject. Would that be accepted by UK? Please remember that we are dealing also with territories that have no population at all, and a vast amount of resources. Would UK remember their own argument? Or are we just seeing a convenient interest marriage? Would UK act based on sole Islander’s interests?
The British background is pragmatic, to say the least, as we all know about Diego Garcia.
Saludos, Maquilishuat
